Outside of Community Theater building

History

The Murray-Calloway County Community theatre was founded January 1977, and in May of the same year, the theatre incorporated as a nonprofit organization and elected its first Board of Directors. The Board immediately began looking for a permanent home. They inquired about the old Murray Freight Depot—an unused, dilapidated building owned by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. This began a 2 ½ year cooperative effort on the part of city officials, county officials, and members of the theatre board to obtain the depot as a home for community theatre.

The depot was moved to its location in the Murray-Calloway County Park in the fall of 1979. In June 1980, the depot opened with “Wizard of Oz.” After three years of “wandering around town,” the Murray-Calloway County Theatre had a home—the Playhouse in the Park. Since that time, the theatre has produced numerous performances in the depot and has continued expanding its educational services, sponsoring the Box of Frogs Youth Theatre Group, holding classes for the community, traveling to schools in the city and county, and hosting an annual Summer Theatre Camp.

Playhouse in the Park is one of the oldest continuously producing theatres in the country. For more information about how you can help in continuing the tradition of community theatre in Murray and Calloway County, contact Playhouse in the Park at playhousemurrayky@gmail.com.

Executive Director

These are exciting days at Playhouse in the Park.  We have a diverse, challenging, fun season planned; we are knee-deep in a capital campaign to pay off the new Arcadia Annex education and storage space, and we are adding many new workshops and projects for all ages.  There has never been a better time to find your place at Playhouse as volunteer opportunities abound.  Join us and see what all the excitement is about!

At Playhouse, we are proud of our 45+ year history.  At the same time, we are constantly looking for ways to stay relevant and meet the needs and desires of our community.  We now have an education umbrella that covers all ages from preschool through senior citizens.  We present a slate of family-friendly productions each season.  We have introduced “Playhouse After Dark” after many requests for more contemporary, edgier material.  We were delighted to become the 7th theatre in the country to join The Penguin Project, providing opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities.  We have answered the call for the return of dinner theatre and dessert cabarets.

As we constantly prepare for exciting new events, let me encourage you to join us – onstage, backstage, or in the audience.  Volunteer with us!  We need your time, talents, and passions.  You’ll gain new friends and enjoy a real feeling of ownership in something spectacular.  I want you to be a part of that!  There is something for everyone at Playhouse in the Park - a place where everyone belongs.
